Word of the Day : felicitous

Just finished these two illustrations for the Word of the Day series. Starting to make this an exercise of experimenting with color. Which is why there are two versions. I think the first one represents more of the definition of happy and delightful; whereas the second I was experimenting with a vintage color scheme.
Definition : Suitably applied or expressed; appropriate; Happy; delightful; marked by good fortune.

Word of the Day : adjuvant

Just started working at Reel FX / Radium this past week as a Motion Graphics Artist and have had a blast. Not to mention I'm surrounded by some amazing talent. Today I saw in my Illustrator at work that there were some color swatches of Reel FX's colors. Decided to do an illustration with them. Was wondering what typography I could incorporate, so I googled the word of the day... result : "adjuvant." Meaning is at the bottom of the illustration, "define : serving to help or assist; auxiliary. assisting in the prevention, amelioration, or cure of disease."

Had a blast just playing around with the colors and experimenting with Illustrator. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did designing it! Looking forward to many great days at Reel FX / Radium.

Random doodles at work

My original reason for this blog was to post sketches and doodles I have in my sketchbook. But I have yet to make a post dedicated to just pure sketches :) These are drawings I've had on schedules, change orders, scripts; whatever paper I was given at work, had some sort of doodle on it. Most of them are of people I saw, or how I saw them, movies I was hyped about, a saying that said something to me, how I felt that day, or how someone else might have felt that day. Hope you enjoy them just as much as I did when I was drawing them.

Quick note: Very first image, has a kid in the left corner standing on the name Ben; he is holding an ice cream cone, and was an idea I came across to tell the story of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream :)

Echo Armonia

Just wrapped up a T-Shirt design for the band Echo Armonia. Asked if I could come up with some that fit their style of music. The "echo" is surrounded by the elevation type line work, while the word "armonia" is on solid line to visualize rhythm. Really enjoyed illustrating and concepting this design. Enjoy!

Kion's Birthday Illustration

I was asked to do an illustration for a soon to be one year old boy by the name of Kion :) His sign is a Leo which explains the lion in the illustration symbolizing Kion. Was a lot of fun sketching and illustrating this fun and playful piece. Enjoy!

Conditioned Response Illustration

This illustration was driven by the theme "conditioned response." I'm always inspired by the Bible and the icons it can create; for instance, the Seven Deadly Sins. Combining the two together created this illustration.

To show conditioned response, I thought of the little kids (monsters) hearing the well known ice cream truck song from down the street with the excitement of wondering which ice cream to get. In the bushes, the devil is playing the song drawing the seven deadly sins closer to him. Seeing that this illustration would be about seven deadly sins, or monsters :) I thought it would be a fun twist to make it a playful one.

Personalizing each character to their name, here's the explanation:

Sloth (bottom left) - too lazy to think which ice cream to get (...?)
Greed (top left) - already has an ice cream in mind, reaching over to pick another
Gluttony (orange) - has more than one favorite ice cream
Envy (bottom green) - jealous that the character in front of him is going first
Wrath (red) - has an edgy feel to him; more spikes and crooked teeth
Pride (purple) - standing tall, fist down, big chin
Lust (blue) - tongue sticking out with a big stare, his ice cream of choice: banana split symbolizing the thoughts on his mind (cherry/woman, banana/man)

And to add the final touch, the bottom right hand corner is the song title : "Ice Cream Truck them song" conducted by the Temptations :) Hope you enjoy it!

Donnie, Farewell.

Well, after working at Adcetera for a couple years one of the graphic designers is moving to Philadelphia with his fiance. He'll still be working for Adcetera remotely and coming back on occasion. So in his goodbye/farewell I was asked to make an illustration that we would pass around and sign. One of the fastest guys I know in Illustrator and Photoshop. Was fun illustration to work on; he'll be missed by all.

Keep the Faith

Here is a T-Shirt design I recently did for a church. Had a lot of fun with it and was the first time I have ever manipulated text inside of Illustrator. Usually I just play with type in the space and not so much incorporating it with other graphic elements; so this was a first :) Updated the website as well with some of my previous animations! http://www.christophervela.com/

Colour Revolt Design

After watching the documentary on Helvetica, I wanted to use it for a personal project, and it fit perfect for this T-shirt design. Colour Revolt is a band I have been listening to for the past year or two and have been amazed by their sound.

Explanation of visuals : The small text is the lyrics to the song "Circus." The illustration as a whole is an abstract circus tent. The balloon's are a symbol of a person slowly getting beat down by whatever is hitting their walk in life. And at the end of the trail, the black balloon grabs (u)because he or she has been rescued from their circ(u)s. Whether it be a friend, colleague, co-worker or a family member, we all need to be there and help each other when in these moments of chaos.

The Panton Chair

This past week, I went to a lecture where Rolf Fehlbaum spoke and gave some insight on Vitra and the history of their work. I have modeled one of their chairs in 3dsmax and had no idea how much thought went into the design. After the lecture I was inspired to design a piece in honor of such an achievement, the Panton chair.

Also, another great person that has inspired me to do this black and white design is Maxim Zhestkov. His portfolio consists of black and white illustrations/renderings. I'm excited to see where his career and talent take him.

Recently I've been wanting to experiment with type in some way or fashion, and was just looking through Stefan Sagmeister's most recent book, Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far. One of the coolest collections of typography that I have ever seen. So this latest posting is inspired by his work and reminding that I myself need to get back into recycling :) Enjoy!

Valentine's Day Illustration

Well as it's a semi-cold and chilly day in Houston, maybe this illustration with brighten it up. Handed these out at my work as my valentine's day card to everyone. Didn't know what to draw or illustrate, so I just took the most popular idol of Valentine's Day, Cupid, and did a little research on the internet. Ended up finding a Greek story/legend of Cupid and decided to draw an illustration based on him.

Hope you enjoy the illustration and have a Happy Valentine's Day!

day one

As the first day in the new year, it calls for a new chapter... starting a blog. I'll be posting new work, updates on the website, sketches and everything in between.

Top 3 Artists that have inspired me this past year:

Nate Wragg
I've been really inspired by an artist over at Pixar by the name of Nate Wragg. Has a good eye for composition, vibrant choice of colors, and always has a great theme/concept to all of his illustrations. If you're looking for an awesome and fun-loving piece of art, check out his work and order yourself a print at Gallery Nucleus.

Christopher Hewitt
AKA, Dstrukt. Killer motion graphics artist. Has a cool style to his look, great timing on all of his reels, and understands typography. What I love about all of his pieces is that he does a good job in having diversity in his work. This motion director is self taught and has been breaking boundaries since he's stepped into the world of motion.

Tyson Ibele
This 21 year old can animate anything that comes his way. He has experimented with different styles and nailed every one of them. Great sense of humor, can be dark at times, but none the less can tell a story in a matter of seconds. I am eager to see when he posts new work and have been inspired by him because of his skill/talent in animation. Once again, hands down to this young self taught animator.

I'll keep a look out for these three and they will for sure keep me inspired over the years. Until next time, check out my online portfolio:
